McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act

IF YOU OR YOUR FAMILY LIVES IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS:

  • Doubled up with other people due to loss of housing or economic hardship

  • In a shelter

  • In a motel or campground due to lack of alternative housing options

  • In a car, park, abandoned building, or other inadequate housing

You may qualify for certain rights and protections under the McKinney-Vento Act.

Under this act, you have the right to:

  • A free and appropriate public education

  • Immediate enrollment in school

  • Choice to continue in school of origin (the school attended when permanently housed) or local school

  • Transportation to and from school of origin, if requested

  • Assistance with school fees and referrals to other community

  • resources

  • Free meals at school

  • Educational services comparable to other students

  • Dispute eligibility, placement, and enrollment decisions by contacting a School Social Worker


WIC Program

The WIC program aims to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care.

The WIC target population includes:

  • Pregnant women (through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth or after pregnancy ends).

  • Breastfeeding women (up to infant’s 1st birthday)

  • Non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends)

  • Infants (up to 1st birthday). WIC serves 53 percent of all infants born in the United States.

  • Children up to their 5th birthday.

The following benefits are provided to WIC participants:

  • Supplemental nutritious foods

  • Nutrition education and counseling at WIC clinics

  • screening and referrals to other health, welfare and social services

Let's Keep Talking is a new informational series for parents and caregivers presented by Marshfield Area Coalition for Youth, School District of Marshfield, and Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library.

Feb 10 - Recognizing and Responding to Mental Health Concerns

Community Mental Health professionals will talk about common mental health issues (anxiety and depression). We will talk about best strategies to help, tips for positive communication and resources.

March 19 - Helping Youth Navigate New and Changing Relationships

The focus of this session is on both romantic and peer to peer relationships for youth. The Personal Development Center will talk about aspects of healthy and unhealthy relationships, plus strategies to communicate with and support youth related to relationship issues.

April 16 - The Impact of Social Media

Arial Andrew from the LEO program will talk about the impact of social media on the youth brain. She will also address ways to talk to youth about social media, setting limits and mitigating the effects of social media.

May 21 - Community Resources for Youth Related to Mental Health and Substance Use

This meeting will be a panel of area mental health workers who will outline how to access important community resources for youth. Wood County CCS program, Wood County Crisis, and School Social Workers will share their knowledge and provide tips to parents.

Free programs

Programs and child care are provided free of charge. Please call to register for programs. This allows us to continue providing quality programming. Programming is developed on an ongoing basis in response to community needs and requests.

Home Energy Assistance Program

The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program offers eligible customers several types of assistance:

  • Home heating assistance

  • Electric assistance for energy costs not used for heating

  • Crisis assistance for energy emergencies

  • Furnace assistance for repair or replacement of nonoperating heating equipment

  • Weatherization assistance to keep homes warmer in winter and cooler in summer

Free Tax Preparation Assistance

WHEN: February 12- April 10, Mondays 12:00-5:00 and Wednesdays 8:00-1:00

WHO: Families, individuals, seniors, and low to moderate income levels.

Warm Line

Call the office warm line at 715-387-6310, Ext 2 for advice on common challenges of raising kids. This line is not for emergencies. The warm line is for parents who may be under stress, have questions, or just need someone to talk to. Parents can also call for information about safe sleep and future classes.


The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) provides assistance for heating costs, electric costs, and energy crisis situations.

Home Energy Plus helps qualified Wisconsin residents reduce energy use and costs through three offerings—the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP), the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), and the Home Energy Plus Furnace Program.

Approved low-income applicants can purchase a Habitat home, with a zero-interest home mortgage and payments over 30 years. Eligible income limits are between $32,450 - $73,440 based on family size.
